From the moment Anthony brought those two kindergartners to the front of the classroom to explain the water cycle, he knew these two water drops needed have expression and personality to tell the story. The problem was Anthony can’t draw! Despite not being able to illustrate his own book, he gave it his best effort.
Bright Sky Press gave Anthony a list of possible illustrators. Immediately Anthony was drawn to Mike Guillory. It was his whimsical view of reality and science that Anthony thought would work perfectly to tell the story of two water drops going through the water cycle.
Anthony and Mike met in the fall of 2013 at Bright Sky Press. Anthony had already created the book, albeit with his crude drawings, but the lay out was complete. Mike never laughed at the drawings, not even a smirk. In fact, he said these poor drawings gave him a good guide for him to go on.
It truly is incredible to see how Mike took Anthony’s layout and created the book you are seeing today. Here are two great examples.
Anthony’s favorite page is Jake and Alice in the ocean. It’s truly incredible to see how Mike made this book come alive!
